Two arrested in Ashanti region for ‘human trafficking’

Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested two men believed to be behind the trafficking of foreign nationals for begging in Ghana.

The two men, their driver and their friends were picked up on Monday after more than 20 Nigerians being transported to Ghana were abandoned at a primary school in Asokore Mampong Municipality.

Although the national insisted that he was moving to Ivory Coast from Niger, the driver and others who brought him said that Ghana was his final destination.

Adult citizens and children sought shelter in the open air at the primary school for three days.

Officials of the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly intervened after being tipped off about the presence of foreign nationals in the area which led to the arrest of the two men.

Meanwhile, some foreign beggars are returning to communities in the Ashanti Region after more than 700 people recently returned.
