Turkey earthquake: Trapped victims send voice notes for help, death toll above 3500

“People are still down there [collapsed] building, they need help,” news outlet quotes Ibrahim Haskoglu said.

According to him, he and others have received video and voice notes from trapped victims telling their location to facilitate rescue.

Haskologlu, who is from Malatya, one of the areas affected by the earthquake that erupted on Monday, February 6, 2023, said he is itching to go home to give at least some help to the rescue mission.

“He told me where he was and ‘we can’t do anything,’Haskoglu told the BBC.

Reports indicate that no less than 3,549 people have been killed, 22,168 injured and more than 8,000 people have been rescued so far, while search and rescue teams continue their work with enthusiasm.

Turkey and Syria were hit by earthquakes on Monday that left damage and debris on each side of the border.

As one of the strongest earthquakes to hit the region in a century, the disaster jolted residents from their beds around 4 a.m., sending tremors as far as Lebanon and Israel.

The magnitude 7.8 earthquake was centered 23 kilometers (14.2 miles) east of Nurdagi, in Turkey’s Gaziantep province, at a depth of 24.1 kilometers (14.9 miles), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.
