Republican lawmakers continue to peddle the false narrative that restrictions on access to guns violate the Second Amendment. They use transparent lies to align themselves with the NRA’s gun culture to secure campaign donations. “The right to bear arms” can be interpreted as having one weapon for self-defense. From the original perspective of the Constitution, the amendment can also be interpreted as the “right to bear arms” which is the weapon that existed when the Constitution was written. Over the years, courts have upheld the Second Amendment without limitations. Despite the fact that the United States leads the world in gun ownership and mass shootings, the Republican Party chose the NRA and dark money over the public safety of American children in schools and citizens going about their daily routines.

Insider Magazine (Jan. 2023) claims there will be 647 mass shootings in 2022 in the US. Gun deaths caused by random mass shootings are increasing at an alarming rate. There is a consensus among law enforcement, the psychological community, and gun reform and gun rights advocates to expand and strengthen gun laws. A majority of Americans support sensible changes in gun laws such as:
- Expanded background checks
- Ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines
- Increased protection for victims of domestic violence
- Increase services for the mentally ill
- Fight the arms trade
- Concealed carry permit restrictions
- Your basic policy limits
- Eliminate gun sales by unlicensed dealers on the internet
However, the support of this reform is favored by democrats rather than republicans. Republicans like to protect gun rights while Democrats prioritize controlling gun ownership. The divide between the parties on the issue of how to reduce gun violence and mass shootings is narrowing. Perhaps the loss of more than 44,000 lives due to gun violence in 2022 penetrates the false belief of those who believe that any form of gun reform is unnecessary and unconstitutional.

This is an important plea to the American people who elect divisive, militant, conspiracy theorist, unqualified people to Congress” Elect them so that American lives will be saved by 1) sensible gun laws, 2) competent preparation for future pandemics, and 3) better policing, legal reform.
