A Washington, D.C., grand jury rejected felony charges against a man who threw a sandwich at a federal agent in protest of President Donald Trump’s crackdown in the nation’s capital, according to The New York Times.
Sean Dunn, a 37-year-old former employee of the Department of Justice, was charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer earlier this month after he allegedly threw a sandwich at him and shouted, “Fuck you! You fucking fascists! Why are you here? I don’t want you in my city!”
D.C.’s U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, a Trump ally, called it a “serious crime,” ignoring critics who pointed out how the president pardoned scores of violent rioters who assaulted over 140 police officers at the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
“Let me be clear, if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, be certain we will come after you with the full weight of the law. Our officers have a job to do, and they should not be abused in the process,” Pirro said. “This alleged assault is no joke — it’s a serious crime, and those who think otherwise will learn just how gravely mistaken they are.”
Prosecutors may try to indict Dunn again, per the Times. However, they’ve been having some trouble procuring indictments in court. A grand jury composed of Washington residents refused three times to indict a woman accused of assaulting an FBI agent in July.
D.C.’s U.S. attorney’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Dunn’s lawyer declined to comment.
