Donald Trump has floated the idea of running a third-party campaign if the increasingly disaffected Republican leader can’t back down to run for president.
Trump signaled the possibility by posting an article on Truth Social Wednesday promoting the option.
Strange, the author of an article in the right-wing journal American Greatness, believes the move will torpedo Trump’s chances of winning the White House. But it will also destroy the hopes of the Republicans, which will be the punishment they deserve for rejecting the popular former president, writer Dan Gelernter points out in the piece titled “The Coming Split.”
“Do I think Trump can win as a third-party candidate? No. Would I vote for him as a third-party candidate? Yes. Because I’m not interested in supporting this corruption [GOP] sauce-train again,” he wrote.
He claimed that “the Republican machine has no intention of getting us to vote for Trump again: They are not uniparty team players. They would rather lose to the Democrats, their brothers in crime, than win with Trump.
He asked: “What do we do when the majority of Republicans want Trump, but the Republican Party says we can’t have him? Do we pick and choose Ron DeSantis because he’ll be better than the Democrats? I say no, we’re not on our knees.
Trump has flirted before with the idea of a third party – and apparently mostly out of vindictiveness.
ABC White House reporter Jonathan Karl wrote in his book “Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump Show” that Trump once told Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel that he was “done” with the GOP and started his own party.
McDaniel reportedly warned him: “You can’t do it; If you do, we’ll lose forever.
He replied: “Really – you’re going to lose without me. I don’t care. This is what the Republicans deserve for not sticking up for me.
Senate Minority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) last week stated that Trump’s political influence has “diminished”.
