Trent Alexander-Arnold says Liverpool are on the right path, but Man Utd’s Marcus Rashford will be difficult to stop | Football News

“Of course, of course,” Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold told him Sky Sports News when asked if he felt momentum was picking up as his side looked to chase down their rivals for a top-four spot.

After a convincing midweek win over Wolves, it looks like Liverpool are starting to get their season back on track.

Four Premier League clean sheets in a row coupled with the return of key players from injury such as Virgil van Dijk and Diogo Jota, this weekend’s crunch game against Manchester United directly. Sky Sports could present the perfect opportunity for Liverpool to strengthen their push for a Champions League position.

“We create results together and we also play good football,” Alexander-Arnold said when we sat down exclusively with him. Sky Sports News.

“We got a lot of wins on the board especially this season, and we have to keep going. We are on the right path, but we have to keep going.”

Going into Sunday’s game, Liverpool are six points off the top four – chasing the likes of Newcastle and Spurs at the top, but does Alexander-Arnold believe his side can beat him before the end of the season?

“As a team, we know it’s not in our hands,” he said. “We need a result to move forward, but there’s still a long way to go and a lot of games to play, a lot can happen.

“It’s important for us to get points there and then, in April and May, when we know we’re going to stand up, but now we have to make sure we’re in a good position to keep going.

“Three points against a team like that [Manchester] United on Sunday will help us achieve that.

How things have gone since the last Anfield meeting

The last time Liverpool met Manchester United at Anfield, it was an emphatic victory. Two goals from Mohamed Salah set up a 4-0 victory – which meant that at the time, they were top of the league. They have won the Carabao Cup and also had an FA Cup final against Chelsea.

“It’s not often you beat United 4-0, it was a fantastic game, we played fantastically,” said Alexander-Arnold.

In less than a year, both of them found themselves in very different situations.

Manchester United eased their way to a Carabao Cup win against Newcastle and are close enough to appear as title challengers, while Liverpool continue to push their season – but as usual, form rarely matches this kind of rivalry.

Alexander-Arnold said: “They played very good football, but the game is not easy when you play against United.

“Manchester United vs Liverpool is always going to be a tough game and they always have a good team and good players, it’s not going to be an easy game and I’m sure it won’t be easy on Sunday.”

How to stop Marcus Rashford?

Depending on whether he starts on the left or up front, Alexander-Arnold will be up against one of the best players in European football in the form of Marcus Rashford.

The pair often go head-to-head on the same side, and Alexander-Arnold and his Liverpool side have had the better of the two sides.

Of the seven times the pair have met, Liverpool have won three of those meetings. However, Rashford has scored five goals in the game.

Alexander-Arnold has been free of Rashford in the past. During the World Cup, the right-back said Rashford was underrated, so it’s no surprise that the United striker is still in his career so far.

“The only thing that has changed is that he may have scored more but he is the same player, he is always a threat and I am sure he will be a threat on Sunday,” Alexander-Arnold said.

“It’s going to be a tough game but that’s what I’m looking forward to and it’s going to be a good test.

“It’s really difficult [to stop Rashford]. He’s a player with a lot of weapons in his arsenal but I think it’s more of a team effort, not just an individual.

“They will have more than just Marcus going forward, it’s a team issue and as long as the team wins on Sunday, that’s all I care about.”

Boots and performance

Alexander-Arnold has had a busy week. Beating Wolves also set them up for one of the biggest games of the season against Manchester United – you can tell the footballers will want to take some chances when they get the chance.

However, Alexander-Arnold took time out to appear at the new store in Liverpool city center with a crowd of Liverpool fans cheering him on, watching him take his trademark free-kick to officially open it.

For the full-back, the event was clearly important – partly to engage the Liverpool fans and also to show their support for their boot supplier, Under Armour.

“It’s something important. The boots I wear and how I feel on the pitch, I’m a player who likes to play without limits and nothing holds me back,” said Alexander-Arnold.

“Comfort, the main thing. As long as there is something in the back of my mind going to the game, then I can go and do it and Under Armor has sent from the first minute I signed with them.”
