Epic sibling rivalry! NFL players Travis Kelce and Jason Kelce made history when they became the first brothers to face each other in the Super Bowl.
Jason, who is a center for the Philadelphia Eagles, and Travis, a tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, found themselves competing for the Super Bowl LVII Championship ring in January 2023.
After the Eagles defeated the San Francisco 49ers in the division championship, securing a spot in the big game, Jason told me USA Today that he’s rooting for his sister team to win — but being a Chiefs fan has an expiration date.
“Yup, I have a Kansas City sweatshirt that I will wear for the next three hours and that’s it for the rest of the year,” he told the outlet at the time. “Win or lose, I’m done being a Chiefs fan for three hours.”
After the Chiefs beat the Cincinnati Bengals that day, Jason made good on his promise, tweeting, “It’s official ended up being a Chiefs fan this season!!”
While two brothers playing in the NFL is a great achievement, it’s not easy for their parents. In 2022, the mother of the duo, Donna Kelce, traveled over 1,200 miles in one day to see his two sons play in their Wild Card game. He watched his eldest son, Jason, beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Philidelphia before hopping on a plane to Kansas City where he surprised his youngest son after the game.
At that time, the NFL celebrated Donna’s journey when they saw her in the crowd. “He made it! Two games. One day. One of the amazing moms,” her official Twitter account read along with a photo of her having fun.
Even before his professional career, raising two competitive boys also proved to be a challenge.
“A lot of broken windows, a lot of, you know, crashes, a lot of fights…and Travis was definitely the instigator because he wanted his brother’s attention,” Donna revealed. Sports Illustration in September 2020. “There are a lot of punches thrown. It’s all just because some people are better than others, and others can’t handle it.
While seeing her two sons at Super Bowl LVII was a heartwarming moment, Donna explained that it also had complications.
“It’s your hopes and dreams come true, but it’s your biggest fear,” Donna told WJW. PJ Zeilger in January 2023. “You know, someone is going to go home a loser, and no one is a big loser.”
However, since the brothers are both part of the offensive line, Donna and her father, Ed, make it clear that a healthy rivalry will never be physical.
“Thank God, they’re both offensive, they might not be able to fight,” Ed joked to WJW.
Jason and Travis, who were born in 1987 and 1989, were raised in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and stayed in the state for college, both playing at the University of Cincinnati. In 2011, Jason was a sixth-round pick for the Eagles and Travis, for his part, was drafted in the third round by Kansas City two years later.
While born and bred in Ohio, the two hosts of the “New Heights With Jason and Travis Kelce” podcast are already in their respective team cities.
Jason is connected to his wife Kylie McDevitt in April 2018, after the couple met on Tinder a few years earlier. “Thank god you swiped right too,” Kylie joked via Instagram alongside a photo of the duo from 2015.
