Manchester United returned to the top of the Women’s Super League after beating Spurs 2-1 in a fiery match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, despite midfielder Ella Toone seeing red.
Leah Galton, scoring her fifth goal of the season, had given the visitors a deserved lead (67) but Marc Skinner’s side hit back with a fine solo strike from Bethany England (75).
The celebrations were short-lived, after Molly Bartrip turned Lucia Garcia’s cross into her own net less than 60 seconds after Spurs pulled level (76).
Tempers escalated after that, as Toone tackled Eveliina Summanen before raising her hand in the Norway international’s face, and the referee had no choice but to book Toone (80).
Marc Skinner’s side went on to claim an important win, but United moved back into the WSL title race as a result – now holding a one-point advantage over Chelsea who have played more games.
