Seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady has announced his retirement from the NFL “for good”.
The 45-year-old confirmed the news in a short video on social media initially announcing his retirement on February 1 last year before reversing his decision to return for a 23rd season just 40 days later.
“Good morning guys, I’ll get straight to the point. I’m retiring. For good,” said Brady.
“I know this process is a pretty big deal, so when I woke up this morning I thought I’d just hit record and let you know first.

“It won’t take long, you only get one super emotional retirement essay and I used my essay last year.
“Thank you very much, to everyone who supported me.
“My family, my friends, my teammates, my competitors, I can go on and on, there are so many.

Brady hung up his cleats as a seven-time Super Bowl champion, five-time Super Bowl MVP, three-time league MVP, 15-time Pro Bowler, three-time First-Team All-Pro selection and the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards (89,214), passing touchdowns ( 649), quarterback wins (251) and pass completions (7,753).
The year ended with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers suffering a 31-14 loss to the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card playoffs.
Brady could be set for a TV booth after agreeing a 10-year deal worth £375m to become the lead NFL analyst for Fox Sports after his retirement.
After reversing his original decision to retire, Brady will fulfill his ambition to play at age 45, and also become the first player to reach 85,000 yards in league history and the first to reach 100,000 yards in a combined regular season and postseason. He also surpassed Peyton Manning for most game-winning drives of all time as well as appeared in Germany’s first regular season game and took his own record for most completions in a campaign.
He closed out his final regular season campaign completing 490 of 733 passes (66.8 percent) for 4,694 yards (third in the league) and 25 touchdowns to nine interceptions.
Brady won six Super Bowl rings and 17 AFC titles in 20 seasons as part of Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots dynasty team that famously was the 199th pick out of Michigan in the 2000 NFL Draft.
