Rangers have confirmed the signing of midfielder Todd Cantwell from Norwich City.
The 24-year-old is Michael Beale’s first player since becoming Rangers manager.
Cantwell, whose deal at Carrow Road is set to expire in the summer, is the subject of interest from a number of Championship clubs but as revealed by Sky Sports News, preferred a move to Rangers over other options he had.
Cantwell told Rangers TV: “I’m excited and I feel very proud. This is obviously a big football club and I’m very happy to start and start.
“This is a big club and there is a big responsibility when you come to Rangers to be the player the fans want to see.
“They want to see players who work hard and players who can win very important games and I hope to bring that.”
Manager Michael Beale added: “I am delighted to welcome Todd to Rangers. He is a player who fits our style of play and we believe he will be a key player for the club in the coming seasons.
“I look forward to working with him on the pitch this week and integrating him into a fantastic football club.”
What can Cantwell bring to the Rangers?
Sky Sports EFL Editor Simeon Gholam:
It’s never been a question of talent with Cantwell, which is always there, and he’s always shown it in seasons and games.
However, apart from a few moments when he shined brightest after Norwich’s promotion to the Premier League in 2019, he has always struggled to show what many believed him to be.
Several seasons have now passed and, despite a change of manager in the Carrow Road dugout, Cantwell has still failed to find that spark. Even last season’s loan move to Bournemouth didn’t have the desired impact.
Maybe a fresh start in a new league will help. At his best, he is clear in the box, he can solve, create and produce moments of improvisational magic. But he turns 25 next month, so now is the time for Cantwell to prove he can produce.
Whittaker remains a Rangers target
It is understood that Beale is considering a number of other options as he looks to bolster his squad with Swansea striker Morgan Whittaker still an interest for Rangers, despite a bid for the 22-year-old being rejected.
Whittaker has not appeared for Swansea since being recalled earlier this month from his loan spell at Plymouth, where he scored nine goals and provided seven assists.
A source from Swansea told Sky Sports News that Rangers were not close to the price for the player, who is likely to participate in the match on Saturday at QPR.
Swansea City head coach Russell Martin, who played for Rangers in 2018, said: “We’ve turned down an offer from them, that’s why.
“We just have to wait and see. It’s not my job – I don’t respect players, I don’t negotiate with other clubs.
“I’m really tired of talking about this. I know you have to ask, but until someone leaves I’m going to repeat the same answer.”
Kent: I have complete confidence in Beale
Rangers forward Ryan Kent has told Sky Sports he is set to discuss his future at Ibrox.
The 26-year-old was out of contract in the summer but after scoring in the 3-2 win over Kilmarnock it was revealed he would hold talks with Beale.
“There is no decision yet and I am just focusing on the rest of the season, but I will sit down with the manager to discuss further,” he said.
“It’s not a distraction for me. I have full trust in the manager. He’s been key for me since I was young and that trust is reciprocated. He’s a quality manager.”
Asked if speculation about his future was a distraction, he added: “Not for me, maybe for people who are discussing things outside. I’ll just concentrate on my game.
“The manager has been key in my career since I was young. The trust is reciprocated between each other and he is a quality manager.”
