Tinubu moves to placate aggrieved presidential candidates – Official

President-elect of Nigeria, Tinubu ballhas begun a move to reach out to opponents still reeling from Saturday’s presidential election defeat.

Mr. Tinubu won the election but three opponents in particular have complained about the delay in the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Tinubu won the poll with 8,794,726 votes, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came second with 6,984,520 and Peter Obi of the Labor Party came third with 6,101,533 votes.

PDP, LP and New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) candidates rejected the poll results, saying INEC failed to comply with the provisions of the 2022 Elections Act on electronic transmission of results.

The opposition has also announced that they will go to court to challenge the poll results.

But the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde, on Wednesday said the president-elect has asked the committee to reach out to the embattled rival.

Mr. Olatunde said the committee of elders of the APC will soon begin to meet with the defeated presidential candidate in the bid to ensure peace after the election.

The statement read, “The president-elect has formed a committee to meet with the gentlemen who participated in the election so that we can start the healing process. I am one of the committee. We will meet them and ask them to work together.

In his acceptance speech on Wednesday morning, Mr. Tinubu appealed to other contestants to work with him to make Nigeria a better place.

He said, “I take this opportunity to appeal to my fellow contestants to team up together. It’s the only nation we have. It’s one country and we have to build it together.

“Whether you are Batified or Atikulated, Obidients, Kwankwasiyya or have other political affiliations, you voted and fought for a better Nigeria, a more hopeful country and thank you for your participation and dedication to our democracy.

“You decide to believe in the democratic vision of Nigerians founded on shared prosperity and nurtured by the ideas of unity, justice, peace and tolerance.”
