<p>One of the constants in politics – more than the Left – is how activists insist on telling voters that various events are “inevitable”. Somehow I had missed the inevitable triumph of communism. the inevitable collapse of capitalism and the inevitable collapse of civilization due to warming/overpopulation/no oil (take your pick). </p>
<p>Britain’s breakup has also been heralded as “inevitable” as a meme pushed by various nationalists and the usual suspects on the Left, but there are still parents who remain. Indeed, as far as I can see, NI is not planning to leave, but despite changing demographics and Scotland will not have IndyRef2 for a long time, mostly because there is not an overwhelming desire from the electorate to have one. </p>
<p>Wales as long as the money is flowing just keep your head down and get on with life. In retrospect, it seems that the ties are much stronger and deeper than the separatists would have us believe. The tie has two large straps; shared cultural and economic background. </p>
<p>Our culture speaks the same language, watches the same TV, supports the same football team, our families spread across the island. This makes it the responsibility of the separatist parties to make a difference, often without it. Does this work with voters, but keeps activists happy. </p>
<p>But several hundred years of living together despite family squabbles means that most English people have very similar views on life. There’s a national outlook that we don’t have with many other places and that’s in the back of our minds,</p>
<p>This is the finance that proves the strongest cable. None of the Celtic nations paid (although they did in some parts of England). But if it is cut all will face a hit not inconsequential in the standard of living and trade. The direct subsidy from the UK coffers is north of £50bn a year for the 3 regional parliaments and that’s before you take national government jobs into account. </p>
<p> HMRC Cumbernauld or DVLA Swansea will quickly move to the UK and trade directly. Unsurprisingly, this is an area that nationalists don’t want to discuss or try to get sugar daddies like the EU to foot the bill. Personally, I have yet to see a convincing case that life would be better outside the Union for any of the three countries.</p>
<p>On the other hand, there is nothing “inevitable” about the Union staying together, ironically the best hope for nationalists may be that Britain is its weakest link. A stretched exchequer, tetchy bunch of neighbors and sheer hostility tiptoeing round sensitivity – what exactly is it for them? </p>
<p>History, place in the world and better to keep close friends, but now not much financial. At some point, politicians will have to look at the current order and improve it to keep the balance across the island. Meanwhile the old dog still looks fit and good and plods on. </p>
