Thailand secured their second AFF Cup trophy on Monday, beating poor Vietnam 1-0 in the second leg of the final to cement their status as a major force in Southeast Asian football.
A fierce first-half drive from captain Theerathorn Bunmathan was enough to win the scrappy encounter in Bangkok, played under the supervision of FIFA supremo Gianni Infantino.
Theerathorn and Peeradol Chamrasamee easily controlled the center for Thailand, leaving 2018 winners Vietnam chasing shadows for much of the match.
Without the throaty support of the home crowd that was felt in the first leg in Hanoi, Vietnam struggled to repeat the spirited performance that saw them scratch out a 2-2 draw.
The 3-2 aggregate victory gave Thailand their seventh AFF trophy – a record – and means they have successfully defended the title on three separate occasions.
Theerathorn’s goal in the 24th minute was the result of patient practice through the midfield, as Vietnam continued to push back.
After a string of passes, charming number nine Adisak Kraisorn – a thorn in Vietnam’s side all afternoon – laid the ball dead as Theerathorn came on the pace, took a touch and unleashed a fierce shot into the bottom corner from 25 yards.
The goal shocked Vietnam, who lost what little cohesion they had shown and almost lost their heads, flying into the tackles as the first half closed.
But it was the defending champions who ended the match short as Peeradol received a second caution in injury time.
Thailand coach Mano Polking admitted it was not a “pretty” performance but praised the professionalism shown by his team.
“All credit to the players – they did a fantastic job,” he said.
Thailand have now won the AFF Cup seven times, ahead of nearest rivals Singapore, with four.
