Today, many Conservatives are visibly outraged by Keir Starmer’s decision to appoint Sue Gray as chief of staff. It was Gray, a former senior civil servant who carried out the investigation after reports of a key breach by Boris Johnson.
Whatever the merits of today’s attack does not highlight a particular weakness on the part of the Tories in finding ways to undermine the Labor leadership. Although he has been on the job for three years, he has yet to find an offensive method that resonates with voters.
Looking back at previous General Election campaigns, a key part of the Tory strategy was to attack leaders and question their ability to govern. What was possible with Corbyn and the EdM is not possible now and that is a big challenge.
One line we’ve heard that fails is Starmer sitting in the shadow cabinet under Corbyn. Sure the LAB leadership can be described as “boring” but in today’s context that can be considered an asset.
