Australia’s Mike Hussey has been confirmed as the new head coach of the Welsh Fire men’s team ahead of the third year of The Hundred.
Hussey played more than 300 times for his country, and has extensive experience in white-ball leagues around the world as a player and coach. Most recently, Hussey was part of the England men’s team coaching staff in their successful ICC T20 World Cup campaign.
He comes into his role before Deadline Day, and The Hundred Draft, where his team will have the first pick.
Hussey, known in the game as ‘Mr Cricket’, said: “I’m really looking forward to starting for the Welsh Fire and being part of The Hundred.
“From a distance it looks like a very good competition, which can attract a lot of people and a lot of kids are interested in the game.
“For my part, I hope I can get help to go in the right direction on the pitch in Cardiff and give all the fans who have come to watch something to be excited about.”
Mark Wallace, Welsh Fire cricket manager, said: “We are delighted to have appointed someone of Mike’s calibre. There are few better people in the world with the expertise and knowledge of white-ball cricket to help us take it. We are moving forward.
“It’s exciting to have him on board, and we look forward to working together to bring success on the field for the team and the fans.”
