The shock news this morning is that Nicola Sturgeon is stepping down as Scotland’s first minister and the SNP leader has certainly reduced the chances of an early second independence referendum.
The move will also make it easier for Scottish labor in the UK general election. Will remember how Scottish politics changed completely by the early independence referendum in September 2014. In the 2010 General Election LAB managed to secure 41 of Scotland’s 59 seats. At the next General Election this was reduced to a Scottish Labor MP.
Analysis over the years has been that without Scotland Labor would struggle to secure a majority at Westminster.
My guess is that it will now be a bit easier for Labor to win back some of the seats it lost in 2015. This could help push Starmer’s party over the threshold of 326 Westminster MPs needed for an overall majority.
