World number one Carlos Alcaraz will not play at the Australian Open after picking up a right leg muscle injury during pre-season training, the Spaniard said on Friday.
“When I was at my best in the pre-season, I had an injury due to an unnatural movement during training. This time the semimembranosus muscle in my right leg. he wrote on Twitter.
“I have worked hard to reach the best level for Australia, but unfortunately, I will not be able to play in Care A2+ Kooyong or Australian Open. It is difficult, but I have to be optimistic, recover and look forward. See you in 2024,” he added.
The 19-year-old claimed his first major title at the US Open last year, which also made him the youngest men’s number one in the world.
Ahead of his first Grand Slam start of the year, he said he was close to being fit before the new season, having missed the ATP Finals and Davis Cup due to an abdominal injury at the Paris Masters.
