Two first-half goals from Casemiro and an own goal gave Manchester United a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
Both teams come into Sunday’s final needing to pick up the trophy drought. When United of Manchester last won the trophy in 2017; Newcastle’s drought began in 2006 when the Magpies won the UEFA Intertoto Cup.
Both United teams have a full complement of first team players, Manchester have Casemiro and Newcastle have Bruno Guimaraes back from a red card in the semi-final.
And the Magpies started the better of the two teams, controlling the midfield through the two Brazilians in Joelinton and Guimaraes.
Despite the early pressure, Manchester United took the lead through Casemiro, who rose to head home Luke Shaw’s free-kick in the 32nd minute. There was a VAR review, but the former Real Madrid midfielder was ruled out by a hair’s breadth.
Marcus Rashford combined well with Wout Weghorst in the 39th minute before driving into the box and seeing his shot deflect off Sven Botman before deflecting off Loris Karius in the Newcastle goal.
After the match, Erik ten Hag said that getting his first trophy was the start of his journey.
“It’s not always the best football, but it’s effective. First of all, you have to win the first one [trophy]. We will get a lot of inspiration from this, but also more confidence that we can do it.
The victory came three days after beating Barcelona to qualify for the last 16 of the Europa League.
