The pre-tertiary teachers’ union has given the government until the end of February this year to settle arrears due to members of the Ghana Education Service Occupational Pension Scheme (GESOPS).
The unions – Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Coalition of Concerned Teachers-Ghana (CCT-GH) and Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU) – said about the donation of members from the arrears scheme in the GH region ¢433,379,819.90.
“According to the above, we the union of workers in pre-tertiary education want to state emphatically that by the end of February 2023 all arrears have not been paid, we have no other choice but as a first step, take the necessary measures. steps to ensure that the costs regulator (National Pension Regulatory Authority) is not paid effective March 2023,” he said.

This is contained in a statement signed by the General Secretary of GNAT, Thomas Musah; President of NAGRAT, Eric Agbe-Carbonu; CCT-GH President, King Awudu Ali, and TEWU General Secretary, Mark Dankyira Korankye.
The statement said that the last payment from the Department of the Comptroller and Accountant General to the members’ pension scheme was for the month of March 2022, which was paid in January 2023, meaning “we have nine months unpaid”.

“Using the monthly contribution in March 2022 as a basis, we estimate that the contribution to the scheme members in arrears is in the region of GH¢433,379,819.90,” he said.
The resulting danger of this situation, he said, is that education workers are “denied the investment value of their contributions”.
