Students of the Taraba State University, Jalingo, on Monday staged a protest over the non-payment of their lecturers’ salaries by the state government for 10 months.
The students who gathered at the gate of the main gate of the university said they decided to stage a protest after their lecturers refused to conduct the first semester exams scheduled for Monday, due to non-payment by the government.
The protesting students then took to the streets of the city to register their grievances.
The protest saw students of the institution burning tires around the institution and on major roads connecting the state capital causing disruption of business activities.
The protesters disrupted the normal flow of traffic towards the Jalingo Government Building.
Witnesses saw students near the Government Building being dispersed by police with tear gas.
Some armed soldiers of the 6th Brigade from Nigerian Army seen in a strategic place.
The protestors who vowed not to end their protest until the state government settles the salary arrears of their lecturers chanted “No exams, no 2023 election in Taraba, “Governor Darius is evil”, “Darius paid our lecturers to complete us. exam”, among others.
Our reporter observed that the protest turned violent when the students started throwing stones around the university premises, also vandalizing billboards of ruling PDP candidates on the streets of the state capital on the way to the government house.
Despite this, no government official came out to listen to the situation of the protesters at the time of filing this report, while our reporter further gathered that on Monday at 5:50 p.m., some roads remained blocked by students including Jalingo Bali. The streets of Takum.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that university staff last week protested non-payment of salaries and threatened not to conduct examinations if not paid.
The Chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union of the University (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Messrs. Solomon Audu and Bitrus Ajibauka, who led the university staff in protest presented a letter to the Vice Chancellor, Minggu Bako, demanding payment of arrears and allowances apart.
Mr. Bako told the staff that the management of the university and the government are working hard to meet their legitimate demands.
