Taraba APC NASS caucus rejects removal of state chairperson

Taraba State Caucus from All Progressive Congress (APC) the National Assembly has rejected the removal of the chairman of the party in the country, Ibrahim El-Sudi, by the state executive committee (SEC).

Members of the caucus, while briefing reporters at the National Assembly on Monday, said the removal of the party chairman violated the party’s constitution.

Mr. El-Sudi is “impeached” by the SEC after invoking Article 21(d)(vi) of the APC Constitution. They reportedly accused the embattled chairman of negligence.

Danjuma Shidi (APC, Taraba), a member of the House of Representatives, who spoke on behalf of the lawmakers, said the removal of Mr. El-Sudi was carried out by some independent individuals working with people outside the party.

He said the SEC was not properly constituted before taking the decision, noting that a quorum was not formed when the decision was made.

“We see no justification and nothing at least supported by the law to remove the Head of State, especially at this critical stage of election preparations.

“These calls and attempts in some areas to remove the chairman of the state extra-constitutionally is a calculated attempt to sabotage the party’s efforts to win the 2023 general polls in the state at all levels.

“According to Article 21 of the APC Constitution, the way Hon. El-Sudi was allegedly removed is constitutionally flawed in substance and procedure. It is instructive and important to note that our party has seized the sanctity of the APC Constitution (2022 as amended). Therefore we must do everything to preserve this sanctity,” he said.

Mr. Shidi also said that some of the people who spearheaded the removal were working with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“We want the national leadership of the party and the world to know that the perpetrators of this unholy idea are in deep romance and are in fact sponsored by the state government of the Peoples Democratic Party in Taraba to destroy the APC.

The APC chapter in Taraba State has been in crisis for some time. Last week, a Supreme Court panel chaired by Kudirat Kekere-Ekun fired the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Emmanuel Bwacha.

The court upheld the ruling of the Federal High Court in Jalingo, Taraba State, that the APC did not conduct a valid governorship primary poll in the state.

The court gave judgment in a case that started with a suit filed by David Kente, one of the gubernatorial aspirants who Mr. Bwacha asked for the APC gubernatorial ticket.

Mr. Bwacha represents Taraba South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
