Tamale: ‘Fix The Country’ Protesters Call For Constitutional Review | General News

Members of the ‘Fix the Country’ movement were in Tamale on Saturday and staged a street protest with hundreds coming to demand a total constitutional review in Ghana.

Graphic Online journalist in Tamale, Mohammed Fugu reports that the organizers called the peaceful street protest march, “Zal kpan Pala”, with the new constitution.

The protesters were not specific about what aspects of Ghana’s 1992 constitution they wanted to see other than stating that they wanted a total constitutional review.

He said he wanted the immediate attention of the government to review the constitution to meet the demands of the present generation and the economic situation.

Dressed in red and black, the demonstrators, composed of youths and activists, held placards with inscriptions such as “We need an independent judiciary”, “a new constitution for a new generation”, “poverty is violence”, “just retreat to save our democracy.” “, “Stealing to enjoy silence”, “We deserve better” among others.

They gathered at Tamale Jubilee Park at about 6am and went through the main streets of the Tamale metropolis before being rounded up.

The new constitution

Addressing the media, Convener #Fix the Country Movement, Oliver Barker Vormawor called on all political parties and relevant stakeholders to join the new constitution by submitting petitions to the relevant authorities.

He said the call for a new constitution is in good faith and an effort to save Ghanaians, especially the youth from the shackles of an “outdated constitution”.

He said a similar exercise would be conducted in all regions of the country, and hoped that it would attract the attention of leaders.
