Six people were shot to death in a small town in rural Mississippi near the Tennessee state line, officials said.
Mississippi Public Safety spokeswoman Bailey Martin confirmed the homicide in Arkabutla, in Tate County, to The Associated Press.
Governor Tate Reeves’ office said they had been notified of the shooting and that a man had been taken into custody.
“At this point, we believe he acted alone,” Reeves said in a statement. “The motive is not yet known.”
Shannon Brewer, dispatcher for Tate County sheriffs, also confirmed that the suspect is in custody.
An elementary school and a nearby middle school in Coldwater were both placed on lockdown while the suspect was searched, according to the Coldwater Elementary School Facebook page. Soon after, a second post on the page said the lockdown had been lifted and “all students and staff are safe.”
Arkabutla is located about 50 kilometers south of Memphis, Tenn., and is home to 285 residents, according to the 2020 census. Nearby Lake Arkabutla is a reservoir that is a popular fishing and recreational destination.
