Supporters of ex-president Bolsonaro storm Brazil’s Congress

Supporters of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro stormed Congress in the capital Brasilia on Sunday, climbing onto the roof and smashing windows.

Other protesters gathered outside the presidential palace and the Supreme Court, although it was not clear if they were able to break into the building.

The incident, reminiscent of the January 6, 2021 uprising at the US Capitol, happened just a week after leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was sworn in on January 1.

Bolsonaro’s supporters have been protesting Lula’s election victory since October 30, blocking roads, burning vehicles and gathering outside military buildings, calling for the armed forces to intervene.
