Stormers downed by last-gasp Glasgow try at the Scotstoun



The Stormers were beaten by a late try from Argentine winger Sebastian Cancelliere, as they lost 24-17 (10-12 at half-time) to Glasgow Warriors in their United Rugby Championship match at Scotstoun Stadium on Sunday evening.

The teams were deadlocked at 17-all with time ticking down and Glasgow on the attack in the Stormers 22m, when outside center Sione Tuipulotu stabbed a perfect grubber over the line for Cancelliere to dive in for the second try and winner in a thrilling match.

At the start of the game, the game got off to a fast start as three tries in the opening quarter saw the lead change three times.

The home team opened the scoring after a great interplay between wings Sebastian Cancellierie and Kyle Steyn ended with Cancelliere passing for an unconverted score in the corner.

The Stormers then responded through Joseph Dweba’s hooker when he broke off the back of a powerful maul and forced his way through in the corner, with flyhalf Manie Libbok adding the extra.

Glasgow almost immediately hit back when eight man Jack Dempsey made a break, with the ball then laid to Steyn to run in the corner, with scrumhalf George Horne again wide with the conversion effort to make it 10-7 up after 16 minutes.

The match continued as the Stormers won again in 30 oversTh minute when they worked to Glasgow 22m and after some concerted pressure ended with a bullet pass from scrumhalf Paul de Wet to fullback Clayton Blommetjies to score in the corner.

Libbok missed the extra to leave the score at 12-10, which the visitors managed to hold on to despite a delay from the hosts.

Hit first

Glasgow then struck first in the second half, taking advantage of a formidable Stormers defense as center Huw Jones snuffed out several attempts to tackle, with Horne adding the extra for a 17-12 lead after 52 minutes.

The Stormers then leveled on 63rd minute when they attacked from a lineout, approached where the forward replacement Junior Pokomela picked up and forced his way through.

Libbok missed the conversion and compounded the kicking woes by tipping over a penalty attempt three minutes later, which left the teams deadlocked, leading to a thrilling conclusion.
