Steep discounts reign supreme for Prince Harry’s mega-marketed memoir Spare

But with 3.2 million copies sold in the first week, the cut prices offered by many booksellers don’t seem to be hurting business.

But a look at the websites of some of Canada’s biggest booksellers makes it clear that the cover price isn’t what most people are paying.

Before its official launch, Prince Harry’s memoir has become an international bestseller thanks to some explosive interviews. Some have questioned whether he is airing ‘dirty laundry’ and royal officials have yet to comment publicly.

At Indigo stores in Canada, spare now being offered for sale for 25 percent off the list price of $47.

The company, citing time constraints, said it could not provide a spokesperson to comment on the pricing approach. spare and the same title.

Amazon is selling the book to Canadian consumers at a 35 percent discount. As of Friday, it was the online retailer’s best-selling non-fiction title of the week.

In response to a question about its thinking on pricing, an Amazon spokeswoman said its focus has long been on “competitive pricing,” in addition to other customer service considerations.

Some regional chains in Canada also appear to be selling spare for less than the said cover.

The website for McNally Robinson, a bookseller with two stores in Winnipeg and another in Saskatoon, has spare at 30 percent of the list price. The company did not immediately respond to email inquiries about pricing.

At the Book City location in Toronto’s Beach neighborhood, the $42.30 online price appears to be a 10 percent markdown below list price.

Andrew Franklin, founder and publisher of UK-based Profile Books, said the low prices offered by the big chains were a challenge to compete with their smaller independent counterparts. They consequently “sold very few copies” of spare-type of release, he said.

Meanwhile, thousands of readers across Canada are looking to local libraries to pick up the book.

The Ottawa Public Library website shows more than 1,900 requests for physical copies spare as Friday afternoon, a week and a half after the release of the book. Hundreds more are waiting to access the e-book version.

A rather long list of Calgarians, nearly 2,000 as of Friday morning, were waiting for a chance to read Prince Harry’s story, according to the city’s library system website.

Not a plan for every book

Franklin said the approach used to sell books like spare it’s more like a book with a lot of appeal, which can be sold to a wider audience.

Popular cookbooks and lifestyle-focused titles would be other examples of books that might be discounted when they go on sale, he said.

Steedman says some of these best-selling titles get a lot of media attention, while many other books are hard to get noticed.

Books launched at scale spare had a lot of money invested in it, which Franklin said “they have to make this a big campaign” to make sure they get the best return.

The amount of money Penguin Random House paid to acquire it spare has not been publicly disclosed.
