One thing we learned about Sunak is that he doesn’t like PMQs and his team will work hard to limit the number of his appearances. Therefore, last week and the next we discovered that the PM would not face the Commons and Starmer.
With next Wednesday considered, the total number of PMQs that will be passed since becoming PM will be 7 which is a higher proportion than the previous one. Of course there are events that the PM has to attend but these usually have to be arranged so that he doesn’t have to be there at noon on a Wednesday for 35 minutes or so.
Commons tradition when the PM is gone is that the opposition leader does not attend. I would recommend that Starmer make a point there even if Sunak isn’t there. This will highlight how often Sunak tries not to be questioned but it will also give Starmer more. After all, Sunak’s absence certainly means the Labor leader gets less coverage.
I can’t see any downside to this and will probably encourage Sunak to do it more often.
On working days in Westminster there are two sets of PMQs per week – on Tuesday and Thursday with sessions lasting just 15 minutes and the opposition leader limited to 3 questions.
