Wits University has confirmed that suspended Student Representative Council (SRC) president Aphiwe Mnyamana “infiltrated” the campus despite being suspended.
Mnyamana was barred from entering Wits University due to serious allegations against him, including what Wits called “violation of the rights of others resulting in property damage, and intimidation of members of the University community.”
Wits students have been protesting for the university to allow students with registrations of R150 000 or less for the 2023 academic year, starting last week.
The SRC president entered
Wits spokesperson Shirona Patel said Mnyamana was not allowed on the Wits campus.
“The university suspended five students last Friday and Aphiwe Mnyamana. We know that he returned to the campus and this is in violation of the suspension order. He sneaked into the campus in a car brought by someone else. He was also asked to leave the campus.”
“This violation will be taken into consideration when the disciplinary hearing is conducted,” Patel said.
The Warga reached Mnyamana, but there was no response at the time of publication.

Lesufi meeting
Patel also confirmed that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is expected to meet with Wits vice-chancellor Zeblon Vilakazi.
“He has to meet this afternoon (Tuesday) one-on-one to discuss things before meeting with a larger group at some point. The Prime Minister canceled because he was in Westbury and then walked with the minister (Bheki Cele). He will reschedule the meeting as soon as possible.
This came after protesting Wits students brought a demonstration to Vilakazi’s private home “to put pressure” on him and even allegedly threatened to burn down his house if he did not comply with their demands.
However, the Wits SRC said it was not a violent attack on the vice-chancellor’s house, but a peaceful demonstration.
protest
Patel added that Wits has no problem with students taking part in peaceful protests.
“The university wants to make it clear that it will not suspend anyone who is protesting peacefully. It is suspending students for violating university rules,” Patel said.
