At age 60 and while battling cancer, Michael Castillo fulfilled a long-held dream by competing in the Sony Open in Hawaii.
Castillo, who faced radiation in November after cancer returned to his liver, is the oldest player in a field that includes three-time major champion Jordan Spieth, who has qualified for the event – his first on the PGA Tour – by winning the Aloha PGA Section. .
He shot a nine-over 79 in his opening round in Honolulu on Thursday, closing with a birdie after 10 bogeys earlier, but was happy to play rather than lose the total.

Castillo’s father and two brothers have previously played in the Sony Open, which like some PGA Tour events reserves spots for local PGA professionals.
“I hit the ball well but I didn’t score well. It doesn’t matter. I really like walking with my brother in the bag. My family is here. Everything is good. I can’t draw. better than the score,” said Castillo.
Castillo was diagnosed with colon cancer almost five years ago, which moved to the liver, lungs and back to the liver.
He has undergone chemotherapy and radiation twice and will know next month whether the latest round of radiation has been successful.

Castillo said: “Next month I will have a PET scan and if everything looks good, they say I will be in remission. That’s good.
“I’ll probably do some so-called maintenance or preventative maintenance to keep the lid on, but it looks good.
“There is a very good medicine and I have a good doctor and I listen to him, even though my wife thinks otherwise!
“Since the cancer journey I guess the perspective to life is a little different – but I’ve been playing this game for 50 years. It’s hard to turn off the instinct of playing the game and what it means to you.
“I think the surprising thing is that I really enjoy playing golf. I don’t feel like I need to settle down and I think my life’s journey has been part of that.
“There are many geek moments with some of the best in the world. Even though I’m not a teenager, I still admire the talent here and want to see, experience and talk to them. . So special in many ways.”
