Two Malawian soldiers are missing after their rescue boat was swept away on Tuesday in the southern Mulanje region.
The New York Times quoted a military spokesman as saying the mission was hampered by the swollen river.
The soldier was part of a six-member crew that rescued stranded people after Tropical Storm Freddy tore through the region, Local Government Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda told local outlets.
Two other soldiers and one civilian managed to swim back after the boat malfunctioned on the way to the rescue mission, the minister told Zodiak Online.
Mr. Banda said one of the missing soldiers was seen in a tree and efforts were made to save him.
Tropical Storm Freddy, a record-breaking storm that made landfall in the southeastern African country over the weekend, has left more than 200 people dead.
Malawi’s commercial hub, Blantyre, has recorded most of the deaths, including dozens of children.
Authorities have delayed the reopening of schools on Friday and declared a state of disaster in the 10 southern districts hardest hit by the storm.
