“He needs to apologize, he needs to get a full retraction,” prosecutor Erik Connolly told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Friday.
Connolly said Smartmatic had been working to build its global reputation for 20 years – and an apology and retraction were essential to regaining that reputation.
“They’re in the business for the long haul, they don’t want to get out of the business,” he said. “This is a family business that has spent its whole life building this.”
He called Dominion’s $787 million a “good start,” but pointed out that Smartmatic expects to earn more.
Smartmatic is suing Fox News, former host Lou Dobbs, current network personalities Maria Bartiromo and Jeanine Pirro, and former Donald Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani for $2.7 billion.
The complaint filed in 2021 said Fox News claimed Smartmatic stole the 13th election in November and December 2020.
“The defendants’ story is a lie,” the lawsuit said. “Entire. And they know it. But, that’s the story they’re selling.
But the network also aired it.
Fox News told ABC this week that “Smartmatic’s claims of damages are unbelievable, have no relation to reality, and on their face are aimed at infringing on First Amendment freedoms.”
