Side hustle selling printables can bring in thousands a month in passive income

There are many ways to make money on the side. You can sell creative services like video editing or rapping. You can work at a conference. You can tutor. These are pretty good social hustles, and if you’re more of an introvert, spending your idle time interacting with other people can be draining.

Fortunately, there are plenty of sideshows that don’t require human interaction. One is to sell printables that you buy online and download and then print yourself. Etsy is full of sellers of printables and is one of the best places to sell them.

Jen Glantz, founder of Bridesmaid for Hire and creator of the Monday Pick-Me-Up and Odd Jobs newsletters, recommends reading the site to get some ideas on what you can do. Type “printables” into an Etsy search, for example, and you’ll find ADHD planners, wedding planners, habit trackers, budget trackers, to-do lists, chore charts for kids, letter sounds worksheets, bill trackers, vision boards, mindfulness journals and apart.

Also, “downloads are something you don’t have to be talented at,” Glantz said. If you have an idea, start with a free design site like Canva.com, with a graphic design tool like Adobe Illustrator or even with Microsoft Excel. Some can be as simple as a Word document titled “Perfect Vacation Ideas.” Then convert it to PDF and start building your store.

Rachel Jiminez opened her Etsy shop in 2019 and sells hundreds of printables ranging from Christmas hunts to digital planners. By 2021, he will have earned nearly $160,000 in passive income.

To find out what to sell, Jiminez recommends using tactics like SEO best practices. They themselves will come up with ideas and then they will use sites like trends.google.com and trends.pinterest.com to see how many people are searching or what they are looking for around them. In the case of her Christmas products, she looked up Elf on the shelf to see if people are looking for Elf on the shelf ideas, letters from the elf, etc.

He also suggests considering your own interests, events in life or seasons. February might be a good time for Valentine ideas, April can be a good month for ideas based on Easter, and more. Think about your community as well, and think about how you can serve. Are you a fitness instructor who knows fellow instructors may be looking for exercise regimen ideas? Are you a babysitter who knows others need game ideas for their children?

Jiminez perfected her Etsy selling skills after taking Julie Berninger’s course on opening an Etsy shop for printables. Berninger opened the store in 2017 and now sells a list of bachelorette party activities, among other products. He himself earns about $1,000 a month in passive income from the site.

One thing to keep in mind if you dive in: Etsy seller fees. It costs 20 cents for each item you list, plus a 6.5% transaction fee on each sale you make.

With the right market, you can make money. “I bought a media kit template there. I’ve bought an Instagram archive circle from there,” Glantz said. “Things I could have made myself but I like them and buy them.”
