Sheff Wed 2 – 1 Newcastle

Josh Windass scored twice as League One Sheffield Wednesday stunned Premier League leaders Newcastle 2-1 at Hillsborough to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Wednesday, who are second in League One, caused one of the biggest shocks of the third round of the year as Newcastle suffered their second defeat in all competitions this season – the previous loss to Liverpool in the Premier League on August 31.

Windass gave the home side the lead in the 52nd minute with a close-range goal, although the striker appeared to be in an offside position with VAR inactive.

Windass then doubled Wednesday’s lead in the 65th minute as he converted well after a run.

But just four minutes in, Newcastle pulled one back through substitute Bruno Guimaraes when he headed in from close range from a corner, although the Brazilian was also seen to be offside.

However, the Owls went on to extend their unbeaten run to 10 games in all competitions, while the Magpies exited the competition at the third round stage for the third consecutive season.

Newcastle’s first taste of what could be in store for them came when Cameron Dawson made a fine stop to deny Alexander Isak a goal in his first appearance since September when he latched on to the Swedish forward’s header.

Dawson again had to be alert to reject Isak, saving less effort trained with his feet after another clever pass from Javier Manquillo.

However, Wednesday took the lead early in the second half after some excellent play by George Byers and Windass was on hand to head home Dennis Adeniran’s cross from close range.

Newcastle had to respond soon, but Dawson produced a fine stop to keep out Elliot Anderson’s effort after a loose ball fell to the Newcastle midfielder eight yards out and was alert to tip over Jacob Murphy’s swerving shot from distance.

That stop proved pivotal as the Owls doubled their lead in the 66th minute, with Windass played by Michael Smith, and he made no mistake, firing past Martin Dubravka to send Hillsborough wild.

But Newcastle could find a quick response this time as it was their turn to thank the lack of VAR.

Guimaraes was in a clear offside position when he headed home from close range after Dawson had blocked Chris Wood’s header from Kieran Trippier’s corner.

The final 15 minutes were a flurry of attacks, barring a terrific Windass free-kick, as Wood missed a good chance in the 82nd minute when Joelinton stepped forward and pounced on the striker who, with an empty net, skipped over for the count. up at night Newcastle in South Yorkshire.
