MANILA, Philippines – Senators on Tuesday hailed Julie Uychiat, the first Filipino to complete the World Marathon Challenge.

In the 2023 edition of the challenge, Uychiat won four out of seven marathons.

During the plenary session, the upper chamber took Senate Resolution No. 471, congratulating and praising Uychiat, a nurse from Negros Occidental.

“His grit, adaptability, resilience, and stamina are now inexhaustible not only when he puts on his scrubs, but also when he puts on his shoes and running shoes,” Senate Majority Leader Joel Villanueva said during his sponsor’s speech.

“Nurse Julie not only heals deep wounds on the patient’s skin. She also heals the hearts and souls of wounded children in Negros Occidental as a benefactor of the Kalipay Negrense Foundation, a non-profit organization that protects disadvantaged and abused children,” he said.

Uychiat’s “Run for Kalipay” initiative, which was part of her race, raised P1.6 million.

Meanwhile, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, chairman of the Senate sports committee, praised Uychiat as an inspiration.

“Your journey inspires me to believe that we can achieve our goals and dreams through hard work and dedication,” he said during his sponsorship speech.

“The honor is very exciting because despite the crisis we are facing due to the pandemic. Our Filipino athletes are making waves in the world of sports and are a great inspiration to our friends,” he said.

(This kind of award makes my heart full despite the crisis caused by the pandemic. Filipino athletes continue to grow in the world of strength and inspire the youth.)

During the challenge, Uychiat, 43, placed first in marathons in Dubai, Madrid in Europe, Fortaleza in South America, and Miami in North America.

However, he finished second, third, and fourth in marathons in Perth in Australia, Cape Town in Africa, and Novo in Antarctica.
