A fire has gutted the Sefwi Dwinase Central Market in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality, North West Region on Tuesday afternoon destroying properties worth thousands of Ghana Cedis.
However, the cause of the fire is still unknown.
More than eight (8) metal and wooden structures and two (2) living rooms were burned.
Sefwi Dwinase Market is the Central Business Center of the North West Regional Capital, Sefwi Wiawso but the trading environment is not good for market women and traders.
Although the Municipal Assembly has built some new shops for traders, but in terms of sanitation and hygiene, the challenge still remains making traders uncomfortable.
The incident that happened on Tuesday, after the Tuesday market, February 28, 2023, it is not clear what caused the fire.
Eyewitnesses stated that the fire started from one of the shops before it spread to other parts.
Some of the items that were destroyed were clothes, various drinks, plantains and others.
The Sefwi Wiawso Fire Service Commander, D02 Joseph Amehere said his office received an emergency call at around 9:10pm and dispatched a water tender with six personnel to the scene within three minutes.
According to him, the fire is still spreading through other buildings.
However, they did their best to contain the blaze and finally got the fire under control around 11:20am.
Meanwhile, the Director of NADMO of Sefwi Wiawso Municipality, Agyeman Bediako said that his office including the Fire Department and the Police will conduct a forensic investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire.
He also reminded shop owners in the market to use proper and quality electrical materials for wiring.
He also asked not to overload the socket to avoid unpleasant disasters.
