Thousands of suspected gang members with tattoos have been sent to a new prison in El Salvador from which they will never return.
More than 65,000 suspected gang members have been arrested since March last year amid a government crackdown in the Central American country.
It comes as an explosion of gang violence left more than 60 people dead – including street vendors, bus riders and market traders – in the country’s bloodiest day since the country’s civil war 30 years ago.
The 40,000-capacity Terrorism Detention Center in Tecoluca, San Vicente, was built with the aim of eliminating the ever-growing prison system.
