Sean Dyche: Everton confirm former Burnley boss as their new manager on two-and-a-half-year contract | Football News

Everton have confirmed the appointment of former Burnley boss Sean Dyche as their new manager on a two-and-a-half-year contract.

Sky Sports News announced on Friday that Dyche had been selected by the Everton board as Frank Lampard’s successor, having also held talks with former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa.

Dyche is the seventh permanent manager hired by Toffees owner Farhad Moshiri since taking over the club almost seven years ago.

Dyche told the club’s official website: “It is an honor to be manager of Everton. My staff and I are ready and excited to help this great club get back on track.

“I know about Everton’s fan base and how valuable this club is to them. We are ready to work and ready to give them what they want. That starts with sweating in our shirts, working hard and going back to some basic principles of what Everton Football Club has stood for a long time.

“We want to generate a good feeling. We need the fans, we need unity and we need everyone to be in harmony. That starts with us as staff and players.

“Our goal is to create a team that works, that fights and wears the badge with pride. The relationship with the fans can then grow very quickly because they are very passionate.

“There is quality in this squad. But we have to make them shine. That is the job of me and my staff.

“We want to change the shape of this club going forward, change it in style, but in a way that we can win.

“This is the task in front of us – make sure we build, tactically and technically, give the players organization, give them the freedom to play, so they can enjoy football because it’s great when the team plays with a smile, but we have to win.”

Lampard’s last game in charge was a 2-0 defeat at fellow club West Ham on January 21, which left them second on 15 points after 20 games – two points below the safety zone.

The Merseyside club have suffered under the former England international, who last won a league game in October when they beat Crystal Palace 3-0 at home.

Lampard was appointed by Everton in January 2022 after he managed Chelsea from 2019/2021 and Derby County in the second tier in 2018/19, but Dyche will now be tasked with arresting the slide to the Championship.

Everton chairman Bill Kenwright said: “Kevin [Thelwell, director of football] and I spent some precious time with Sean over the past few days and he quickly became convinced that he has the right attributes to make him a great Everton manager – and someone who can inspire the fan base. And Farhad felt the same when he met her.

Dyche’s first game as Everton boss will be at home to Premier League leaders Arsenal on February 4.

‘Dyche has the experience Everton need’

Stubbs: Dyche must give Everton an identity

Former Everton defender Alan Stubbs told Sky Sports:

“I wish Dyche all the best in the job, but secondly, he has a big job to do. Anyone who knows football or a fan of any club can see how big the job is in front of him. But he knows his way. , I’m sure he will tackle it head on. He’s not soft, he’s an experienced manager.

“The one thing that needs to be taken away from the player is that he has to choose because he lacks confidence and Dyche needs to give Everton an identity.

“For the last few months, I think Everton fans don’t know what this team is, whether they are a counter-attacking team, that will play through the third. They have to follow the players.

“All eyes will be on the players now that the manager is gone. They are behind the manager, but the performances are not supporting it.

“I hope Sean can really get this player in because some people need to kick their butts. He needs to get back to the level he showed in the beginning.

“We are very easy to play against and conceding too many goals, which has said that we have a problem in the team. One thing with the Dyche team is that first and foremost they are hard to beat.

“He did a fantastic job at Burnley and that’s only finally starting to change. He needs to bring some identity and solidity to the team.

“He must be clear on how to play. Don’t overload him too much, get him out there and do the basics. You can look to build on it. When they have been in the game at 0-0, they’ have beaten themselves but with Dyche he will was there until the end.

“This group of players is not good enough to keep Everton going so they need help.”

There’s an old saying: a week is a long time in football. For Evertonians, the past week has been an eternity.

Even those who lived through the desperate and barren days of the 1970s cannot remember a week where the club has looked more disjointed, fractured and confused.

It has indeed been a torrid time for Merseyside’s Blue half, with Sean Dyche’s appointment imminent, there is little hope that some form of stability will return to the dressing room.
