The new goalkeeper is set to make his Scotland debut in the Euro 2024 qualifiers at Hampden Park and Motherwell’s Liam Kelly is hoping he will be given the chance.

With No 1 goalkeeper Craig Gordon out due to a second break, head coach Steve Clarke has also named the duo of Norwich’s Angus Gunn and Hearts’ Zander Clark in the squad.

While Kelly and Clark had been called before, it was Gunn’s first time after switching allegiance from England.

Gordon, who has 74 Scotland caps, is targeting a return to action next season and Kelly admits whoever is given the chance will need to impress to keep the jersey.

“It’s always a big opportunity for anyone because over the last 20 years there have always been three of them at an unbelievable and amazing level,” he said. Sky Sports News from Hearts stopper David Marshall and Allan McGregor.

“Now is an opportunity for someone to show that they can do it and we don’t know if anyone can play at that level.

“If you go, it should be the same, try to train as much as possible and the manager will choose the goalkeeper he wants for the game.”

Scotland manager Steve Clarke says it will be easy to convince Norwich goalkeeper Angus Gunn to switch allegiance from England, but says he has yet to decide who will start this month’s Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Kelly, who has made 35 appearances for Motherwell this season, insists there will be no bad feelings if he is overlooked for the games against Cyprus and Spain.

“I’m sure all three in the squad will feel ready, but if not, you back the keeper to play because in the end Scotland win is the most important thing,” said the 27-year-old.

“Angus plays every week for Norwich in the Championship so he’s a really good goalkeeper. I’m looking forward to working with him.

“He’ll think he’ll be good enough to play, Zander will think the same and I think the same.

“The manager is always fair about the players who have trained well, they always play.

“It will be interesting because it will be new people, it will be fresh people and people who have never seen the fans.

“At the end of the day the most important thing is that Scotland do well and, whoever the goalkeeper is, I hope they play well and get a good result for Scotland.”
