In his years of doing this job, Foley said he has never been shot. He said people usually just give up and drop their cargo or go back to Mexico.
Foley said he started doing the job after the financial crisis of 2008. He had made a decent living as a construction crew supervisor, but left when the work dried up and his pay fell.
He sold his house, his possessions, and now lives in ramshackle digs near the border, collecting donations, doing chores, saying the US government needs to do something.
He is very, very anti-government. His scorn extends to the Border Patrol, which insists, despite the claims of its members, that it has all the necessary resources.
He wants to see the union disbanded and his employees forced out of their vehicles and offices, having to camp out for a week’s shift on the road, doing what they do.

In his view, the attack on the US Capitol was less destructive than the left-wing protests, and may be just a preview of what’s to come here, in a country armed and angry, millions of whom have combat experience.
