
Marie biscuits are a firm favorite among South Africans as a simple tea treat. However, they are very versatile when it comes to turning them into desserts, especially Marie’s childhood favorite box of chocolate biscuits.
For some, this square brings back memories of elementary and high school when students who were squires and debs collected funds for school, balls or charity events.
To raise money they will sell for R5 one Marie chocolate biscuit box over 10 years ago. Anyone know how much it costs now? All bucket loads will be finished by noon. To get nostalgic, you can easily make many at home.

This dessert or treat is electricity friendly: you don’t need to use an oven or a mixer to make it. However, if you want it to harden faster, you can put it in the fridge for a few hours.
Marie box of chocolate biscuits
ingredient
- 250 grams of butter (do not replace margarine)
- 500 g icing sugar
- ½ cup of chocolate
- 1 egg, slightly beaten
- 1 packet of Maria biscuits, broken into pieces

Method
- Melt the butter in a large saucepan until melted. Remove the pot of melted butter from the heat and add the icing sugar and chocolate. Blend until smooth and make sure there are no dry bits.
- Add the beaten egg and vanilla and mix well.
- Add the broken biscuit pieces and stir until combined and evenly coated with chocolate.
- Spoon the mixture into a buttered 24 x 24 cm baking tray (or a baking pan) and level with a spatula.
- Allow to cool and firm, then refrigerate to speed up the process if necessary.
- Cut the contents of the pan into 16 squares and store the squares in an airtight container.

You can add nuts to the chocolate box and if you experiment try other biscuits such as shortbread, Tennis biscuits or oat crunchies.
Store in the refrigerator for some longevity.
