Forever and ever! Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick bound through the love of the musical theater connection in the ’90s and nearly 30 years after meeting, they keep music and love alive.
In November 1991, shortly after Parker broke up with his longtime girlfriend Robert Downey Jr., the couple met through the world of Broadway.
Broderick was introduced to his future wife by the two Parker brothers, Pippin and Toby, who helped start the Naked Angels Theater Company in New York City. It wasn’t until a few months after they first crossed paths, however, that Ferris Bueller Day Off star asked Parker on a date.
In 1996, the couple starred together for the first time on Broadway How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Ahead of his debut show, Parker opened up Los Angeles Times about her budding romance with Inspector Gadget star, calling him “the funniest person I’ve ever met in my life.”
“He’s so bright, so handsome, I think he’s the most handsome man I’ve ever seen in my life,” she told the publication. “And he inspired me. I was mad at him, absolutely.”
After marrying in 1997, the couple welcomed their first child, son James in 2002. Seven years later they became parents to twin girls, Marion and Tabitha, via surrogate.
Throughout their 20-plus year romance, the two stars have kept their relationship private, which Parker said in 2013 was a background in theater.
“Matius and I come from a different time and place,” Ing divorced alum to Harper’s Bazaar in 2013. “When we were young, we all wanted to be good actors. [My dream] this is to work in the theater, to be surrounded by people whose work I am in total awe. Nobody talks about being a celebrity.”
He continued: “So, when our marriage is a conversation, we don’t have to respond to accusations or rumors. You have to be a bit circumspect, but you also have to take a position, and you have to stick to it.
At Type and City alum, however, gush about his wife and explain why marriage works.
“I love Matthew Broderick. Call me crazy, but I love him,” she told the outlet. “We can only be in our marriage. We are very devoted to our family and our life. I love our life. I am happy that he is the father of my children, and because of him there is another world that I love.
The duo has kept a professional distance from each other, but in 2020 they are ready to take the Broadway stage together. Suite Plaza. “I feel like I’ve been waiting a lifetime,” Parker wrote via Instagram in September 2019, announcing her return to the stage with her husband.
The event was put on hold amid the coronavirus pandemic, however, Parker said Rosie O’Donnell in an interview in March that he was “optimistic about the opportunity to do so in the future when it is safer to gather again.” It is currently scheduled from March 19, 2021, to July 18.
