The Jospong Group of Companies (JGC) and other private companies interested in Ghana’s waste management space are encouraged to look at the possibility of investing in used vehicle recycling.
The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Mrs. Cecilia Abena Dapaah, made the call when she received a delegation from Wongpanit Pathong Company Limited, a waste management company in Thailand and globally, at her ministry on Friday, February 24, 2023.
The meeting with the minister and the Wongpanit delegation, led by the President, Dr. Somthai Wongcharden, was facilitated by the JGC.
According to Mrs. Dapaah, used car recycling will be a new area for Ghana’s waste management sector, adding to the prospects for potential investors.
“It will be very interesting for the Jospong Group of Companies and other private companies interested in exploring the possibility of investing in the recycling of used cars,” he urged.
They are delighted that this Thai waste management giant is involved in the recycling of used cars and other car products including used batteries.
“We have a lot of damaged cars sitting at the police station; a lot of used car tires collect mosquitoes, especially during the rainy season, and this is a very interesting area,” he said.
He is also pleased that the Jospong Group of Companies has established a new relationship with a global waste management company in Thailand.
“I must say that you are with the right person and the right company (making reference to Dr Siaw Agyepong and the Jospong Group of Companies),” he told the delegation.
He praised the Jospong Group of Companies for growing in the recycling space for waste management.
“But I believe you [Wongpanit Pathong] older and bigger as a company so the cooperation will be very profitable,” he said optimistically.
Mrs. Dapaah, therefore, appealed to both foreign and local investors to come and invest in Ghana’s waste management space, underscoring that Ghana produces about 7 million tons of waste every year of which about 64% is organic.
He said that the collaboration between the government and the private sector produced “great results.”
“… and I must say we are on the right track,” he admitted.
One of the major collaborations, he said, is the construction of recycling plants in all 16 regions of the country.
“And as I speak, we have 2 out of 3 liquid waste management companies that are also ready. One has been commissioned and the other 2 are coming,” said Mrs. Dapaah.
The waste management facility, he said, was made possible through the government’s cooperation with JGC.
Mrs. Dapaah reaffirmed the government’s policy to collaborate with the private sector to stimulate the country’s growth, stressing that “without the private sector we will not succeed.”
Earlier, giving a briefing to the minister about the operation of Wongpanit, the President of the Thai waste management company, Dr. Somthai Wongcharden, said that his company focuses mainly on recyclable materials, but added that “now we are also expanding through non-recyclable waste from municipal solids . waste, so we also work on landfills.”
“We collect waste from various households and then take it to a recycling facility,” he said.
He pointed out that the main success factor of the company is to think about the needs of the market, and then “we create products and services to meet the demands of the market.”
Dr. Wongcharden, who spoke through an interpreter, noted that the same goes to the city of garbage mining, indicating that the company is mining garbage from the city.
“We work as a private company but we also have a relationship with the Thai government,” he said.
Furthermore, the President of Wongpanit Pathong Co., Ltd., said that his company also manages waste that can be recycled such as car batteries, electronic waste (e-waste) and others.
“We also recycle car batteries, recycle used cars. We also cooperate with Mercedes Benz Thailand to destroy damaged cars,” he said.
He informed that Wongpanit Pathong Co., Ltd., has 2,334 branches throughout Thailand, adding that the company has branches in Cambodia and the United States and other parts of the world.
Branches in the United States, he said, were doing well.
