MANILA, Philippines – Coach Jorge Galent believes San Miguel Beer can remain a warrior without June Mar Fajardo’s injury based on the way they played in Wednesday’s win over NLEX in the PBA Governors’ Cup.
“This game showed that we can win without the big boys,” Galent said after the Beermen’s 120-106 win over the Road Warriors at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City. “If the players step up and give a lot of effort, the W will come.”
Fajardo will be out for at least six weeks with an MCL injury he suffered while San Miguel played in the East Asian Super League in Japan, and his latest injury has raised concerns about his chances of winning the crown at the end of the season.
But San Miguel already had a second-to-beat in hand even before Fajardo went down, a good start in Galent and the crew’s bid to go on a deep run in the playoffs.
San Miguel also got a big game from import Cam Clark, who finished with 45 points and 17 rebounds against NLEX.
It’s a performance that comes despite San Miguel practically having nothing to play for, except for the seeding goal.
The Beermen have a doubles advantage to beat but could still be the top seed in the quarter-finals depending on the outcome of Friday’s double header.
At 8-2, San Miguel eliminated Rain or Shine while 9-1 TNT and 8-2 Barangay Ginebra square off in the nightcap.
“I hope he continues to play hard and play with a lot of effort because I know that Juni Mar is a big factor here, so we have to double down offensively and defensively when Juni Mar is not here,” Galent said.
