Tech giant Samsung has explained the technique used in its phone to photograph the Moon.
The response from the Korean company follows a viral Reddit post that clearly shows the additional details Samsung’s camera software adds to images when it takes a photo of what appears to be the moon.
Picture of the moon
Reddit user ibreakphotos just took a photo of an artificially blurred image of the moon using a Samsung phone.
ibreakphotos claims that the Galaxy S23 camera artificially enhances the “Space Zoom” of moon photos, that the camera uses an AI model to apply textures to the photos taken by the user, and that Samsung’s marketing around the camera zoom is “deceptive” because the AI technology is allegedly not. it only adds image detail but actively creates detail that is not present in the raw image.

Samsung responded
In the statement to The WargaSamsung says it is committed to delivering the best-in-class photo experience in any situation.
“When the user takes a photo of the moon, the AI-based scene optimization technology identifies the moon as the main object and takes multiple images for a multi-frame composition, after which AI enhances the image quality and color details.
“It does not apply an image overlay on the photo. The user can turn off the AI-based scene optimizer, which will turn off the automatic addition of details to the photo taken by the user,” said the company.

Fake or real moon pictures
When asked whether the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s mobile phone camera recognized the image of the moon as a real moon, the company said that it is making improvements.
“Samsung continues to improve the scene optimiser to reduce potential confusion when capturing real moon images and moon images,” he said.
Galaxy S23 series
Samsung announced the Galaxy range, S23, S23+ and S23 Ultra with 200MP cameras in February.
Last year, the Galaxy S Series took a big leap – the S22 Ultra joined the Note series with pro-grade cameras and the performance of the S Series.
