Salley Carson posted a photo of herself crying and shared that she’s good at putting on a “fake smile.” The Southern Charm star addressed her “reality” as she hinted at people’s “curated versions” of themselves online.
On the latest season, some fans criticized Salley for allegedly going after both Craig Conover and Austen Kroll as potential partners. She later explained that she was never interested in a serious relationship with Craig, and that she and Austen are just friends.
“I’m pretty good at putting on a fake smile,” said Salley in an Instagram post honoring Mental Health Awareness Month, “and being known as someone who’s always in a good mood or having fun partying. I think social media can make people feel like everyone else is handling life perfectly, when in reality a lot of us are just figuring it out day by day. Me included.”
Salley posted a photo of herself crying as she held a dog.
“This isn’t a sympathy post,” she continued. “And I definitely don’t have all the answers. I just know that the moments I’ve felt the least alone were when someone else admitted they were struggling too. So if you’ve been anxious, burnt out, emotional, exhausted, numb, overthinking everything, or just not feeling like yourself lately…you are not the only one.”
She said you don’t need to “hav[e] it worse” than someone else in order to “earn rest or support.”
“Be kinder to yourself. Check on your friends. Put the phone down. Go outside. Ask for help if you need it,” she said. “Cry if you need to… Some of these I need to work on myself. We’re all human before we’re curated versions of ourselves online.”
Earlier this year, in an interview for ET, Salley called her costar Craig “calculated.”
“I love our friendship that we have, but [Craig] comes around more so when, like, the reunion’s coming up, or when we’re about to start filming,” she shared at the time. “He starts to check in more.”
“It feels like he’s only doing it because cameras are about to come back up … like he’s trying to kind of patch things up before the reunion, or before the next season or whatever it is,” Salley added. “I don’t really like that, because I would love to have a solid friendship with him throughout the year. And I think that is really the main issue.”
