Philip Billing opened the scoring for Bournemouth with a fine shot from eight yards, taking advantage of poor Liverpool defence.
Virgil van Dijk went close to equalizing for Liverpool with a header cleared off the line, and substitute Diogo Jota was denied by a save from Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto.
Liverpool were given a lifeline when Adam Smith handled Diogo Jota’s header in the box, and Liverpool were awarded a penalty. However, Mohamed Salah, who was Liverpool’s top scorer in the Premier League last week with 129 goals, missed the penalty, much to the delight of Bournemouth fans.
