The technical director of the South African Football Association (Safa) Walter Steenbok has introduced a debrief with the staff of the entire national team, saying that this will be a common practice at Safa.

Steenbok said he had met with Banyana Banyana’s technical team, where each member had to report after the team’s friendlies against Brazil and Australia last year.
He has also sat down with the U-20 coaching staff after competing in the qualifiers for the Afcon 2023 in Egypt, which was held in Eswatini late last year.
Safa’s technical director explained that when they sat down with the coaches and other technical staff, they wanted to know about the lessons learned and where there is a need for improvement for their respective teams.
“So it’s common here now. I met Banyana Banyana when he came back from the friendly match against Australia in London (in October 2022). We let him play in the friendly match against Brazil (in September) and after the Australia match we had a debrief . So this is now the standard at Safa,” Steenbok told Safa.net.
“From the current tournament we have a debrief where all members of the technical team give input on their own report during the camp. The main element is the lessons we learn, and where we can improve as we move forward.
Under-17s
On Tuesday, Steenbook is set to continue his debriefing via zoom meeting with the men’s U-17 technical staff after participating in the Cosafa Under-17 Championship in Malawi last December and finishing as runner-up.
“So this is not a witch hunt. I also spoke with the coach of the National U-17 women’s team Delisile Mbatha, and Ntombifuthi Khumalo about what happened in Malawi, preparations before the tournament, challenges and how we can improve,” he said.
