Russia will not be able to participate in World Athletics events for the “foreseeable future”

Russian athletes will remain banned from track and field “for the foreseeable future” because of the country’s invasion of Ukraine, World Athletics president Lord Coe said.

The International Olympic Committee is exploring a path for Russian and Belarusian athletes to be neutral at next year’s Olympics in Paris.

However, it seems unlikely that he will be able to perform in athletics – perhaps the highest Olympic sport.

Coe told a press conference: “The World Athletics Council has approved the continued exclusion of Russian and Belarusian athletes from all World Series events for the future due to the ongoing invasion and war in Ukraine.”

The World Athletics Council also decided to exclude transgender women from women’s events.

Coe added: “The World Athletics Council has now taken decisive action to protect the category of women in our sport and to do so by limiting the participation of trans athletes.”
