Russia Postpones Launch Of Digital Ruble Indefinitely

The scheduled trial of Russia’s digital ruble has been postponed; it is due on April 1. This is because the regulatory framework necessary for the pilot to continue has not been adopted, as the state-owned news agency TASS reports.

According to the same report, the law on CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency) may be approved by the Russian State Duma in the coming months and is expected to take effect in May. The trial period for the digital ruble in Russia is planned to include 13 banks.

The report also suggests that some employees of participating banks and one of Russia’s largest insurance companies, Ingosstrakh, will be test participants for CBDC retail payments. They will participate in the digital ruble trial.

After the pilot run of the digital ruble begins, these selected individuals will be among the first to test the effectiveness and efficiency of CBDC retail payments.

Russia is expecting a Digital Ruble

Russian bank executives are reportedly very enthusiastic about the digital ruble, as stated by Vitaly Kopysov, Innovation Director at Bank Sinara.

He said,

The use of smart contracts should reduce the operational burden of banks and make transactions transparent, which will not only reduce the possibility of misuse of government and bank funds, but ultimately simplify the control of existing contracts.

Implementing a digital ruble is expected to bring significant changes to Russia’s banking industry and financial sector, making transactions more secure, efficient, and accessible to customers.

Adopting CBDC technology will speed up the payment process and bring new opportunities for innovation and growth.

Russia initially made plans to conduct CBDC trials in 2024. However, the Russian central bank has shortened the timeline by a year due to financial sanctions imposed by Western governments.

Launching a digital ruble may positively affect the Russian economy, which will help reduce the effects of foreign sanctions imposed after the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

More details about Digital Ruble

The upcoming trial of the digital ruble will include real-time transactions and real consumers. However, it will still be limited in scope.

In the initial phase, the general public will not be allowed to participate as only a few selected customers of the participating banks will be allowed to participate in the pilot.

After the conclusion of the first stage, the Bank of Russia will evaluate how to expand the scope of the digital ruble. Recently, several countries have shown interest in introducing digital currencies, or CBDCs.

Nations such as Japan, Brazil, and India are already pro-CBDC. China is also the leader in the CBDC race; has been advancing the CBDC or digital yuan pilot program for the past few years.
