A federal grand jury in Washington has subpoenaed Rudy Giuliani, former lawyer for Donald Trump, The New York Times and Bloomberg reported on Friday.
A source familiar with the matter told the outlet that the subpoena was sent in November, before Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed special counsel Jack Smith to take over the investigation into possible efforts by Trump and his allies to overturn the election results.
According to the Times, the subpoena demands that Giuliani hand over documents about his work for Trump and any payments he received. Shortly after Trump lost the race against President Joe Biden, the president’s former lawyer filed several lawsuits on his behalf in an attempt to overturn the election results. Sources familiar with the matter said some of the records may be related to payments made by Trump’s fundraising effort, Save America PAC.
Giuliani’s counsel told CNN, which also reported on the subpoena for Giuliani, that his client “is not aware of the specific claims of this so-called ‘anonymous source,’ and therefore cannot respond.”
There have been no sightings of Giuliani at the Washington federal courthouse in recent weeks, Bloomberg said.
It is unclear whether Smith’s office has taken over any part of the investigation surrounding Giuliani. The special counsel is currently investigating whether Trump is trying to interfere with the results of the 2020 election and is looking at numerous classified documents found at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate last summer.
Smith may complete the investigation and potentially file charges against Trump in the coming months, sources told Bloomberg last week.
Giuliani is facing various legal problems, including a lawsuit filed by Dominion Voting Systems for defamation. His law license was suspended in New York in 2021 for what the court ruled were “false and misleading statements” related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
